Obituary of Alan W. Merkel

Alan  W. Merkel, 72, 

Alan William Merkel, 72, passed away Friday October 29, 2021 in the Sanatoga Center of Lower Pottsgrove.

He was born September 21, 1949, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late William and Clara Mae (Miller) Merkel.  One of three boys, Alan grew up in the Pittsburgh area where he graduated from North Allegheny High School and then served his country in the US Air Force. He continued his education at Penn State with a degree in Engineering. Alan retired from Penn DOT after working as a Civil Engineer for over thirty years. Alan raised his family in Phoenixville, where he called home for close to 35 years. He was an avid Phillies and Eagles sports fan. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on model trains and attending air shows. 

Alan was preceded in death by his wife, Karen and his brother, Howard. He will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Kathryn Ball and Sara Merkel, son in law, John Ball, two grandchildren, Johnny and Tessa and his brother, David.
