I happened upon this obituary for my unforgettable 7th grade history teacher,Joseph Leonardo. He was my most memorable teacher who made each class an adventure. A dedicated teacher who shared his love of history, current events and music with us. Many years later in my 20s, I ran into Mr Leonardo and his lovely wife Deirdre. Truly one could see she was the love of his life. I'm sure as I write this Joseph Leonardo is wowing historical figures with his knowledge and serenading them as only he could do. Rest in heavenly peace Mr Leonardo

My memories of Uncle Joe is that he made every holiday, celebration, and milestone so much fun! He was such a gentleman how he always honored the love of his life Dearie. They would travel and bring me gifts from their trips often with a note enclosed along with a seven layer cake. From the times as a young girl to growing up and sharing him with my boys he always had a great bit of advice and a bit of history to share. He always would keep in touch and encourage Matt and Chris. Most notably whatever celebration we were having that week or month Uncle Joe would always be there making a difference and sharing and making memories. He will be dearly missed.

Joe Leonardo was a wonderful teacher. He was an example to all of what excellence in education is all about. He was my seventh grade history and English teacher and one of the reasons I became a teacher. I remember a lesson on prepositions. He was tapping on the blackboard s hard that he broke the Jade Wedding Band Diedre had given him. He shouted :Diedre is going to kill me"..and then he laughed as did we all. He was like a member of the family...chosen because we loved him so much.
Rest in Peace Mr. Leonardo...your memory is treasured!

Deirdre Kast was my 5th grade teacher at Edison School in Fair Lawn. All of the students remembered when Miss Kast produced her engagement ring one morning. One of the students asked simply: "Mr. Leonardo?" And she sheepishly nodded "yes."
Joe and Deirdre remained personal family friends through Deirdre's brief lifetime. I remember Joe's terrible distress as Deirdre suffered through her cancer.
Some years later, well after we moved to LA, Joe visited his cousin(?) and nephew (?) in LA. I wonder if they are still here. That was the last time I was in touch with Joe, although I seem to recall that he then moved to Florida.
I have often thought of Joe's love of opera. I went with him to record for a children's record in NYC once.
His cheerfulness, ingenuousness and, above all, his lifelong love for his wife remains in my memory. The great shame is that their romance was cut so short by her untimely passing.
I appreciate that Kenny Bratspies, my friend in Fair Lawn, alerted me to his demise.

I have so many memories of Joe that a book could be written. We became cousins
when Dearie & Joe were married in Boston, I was 12 years old and attended the
wedding with my parents Gerald (Uncle Jerry) and Beatrice (Aunt Beatie).
As I went through high school Joe encouraged me to attend college and become
a teacher. During college I often visited Joe's classroom at Memorial JHS in Fair Lawn. At his request I also visited his class, while in uniform, after I was drafted into the Army in 1968. Joe's enthusiastic teaching performances were a strong influence
on my own 35 years in the classroom, especially jumping up on the desk and
singing/dancing! When Patty & I got married in 1970 Joe sang at our wedding. We are sure that his strong/beautiful tenor voice is still echoing in the church! We all know Joe
as the "#1 Zoogie", a name that he called his favorite people, Darren is #2 and I am
#3. How can we ever forget the "Zoogie Hand Shakes"? As we parted two weeks
ago it was with a "Zoogie Shake". God Bless you Joe as you join your beloved Dearie in heaven.

Joe Leonardo was perhaps my very favorite teacher among many outstanding ones. He was gentle and caring but expected respect and diligence to the subject matter. He made learning fun and most of the girls, including me had a junior high crush on him. He made such a positive impact on so many. A life well lived! Thank you Mr. Leonardo, rest gently and peacefully now.

My deepest sympathy and warmest condolences to the family of Joseph, Mr. L, Leonardo. Mr. L was the absolute greatest teacher on planet earth and every student who was fortunate to be in his history class had a front row seat to what could've easily been a one man show on broadway. We acted out American History with our "Cardboard USAs" from the founding fathers to the expansion west and ending with the confederates surrender at Appomattox!
Every student should have a Mr. Leonardo in their lives. Rest peacefully Joseph Leonardo, you're the greatest and we love you!

I encountered the charismatic Joe Leonardo, when I was in the 5th grade and he was courting the teacher across the hall--my teacher, Dierdre Kast Leonardo. He was a talented teacher, a passionate man and a wonderful role model. He stands out in my mind as a special person, and I wasn't ever in any of his classes. Rest In Peace, Mr. Leonardo.

Mr. Leonardo was not only a great teacher, but a very caring and giving man. He was my 7th grade American History teacher in 1980. He was so energetic and enthusiastic about American History. At any moment he would jump up on his desk and break out into song. He made learning fun and has had an everlasting impact on my life. He went to a football game i played in during my junior year of high school after he retired and took the time to personally call me and congratulate me for a good game. He showed an interest in me i never felt with any other teacher. He was a truly inspiring teacher that has had an enormous impact on me and every other student he taught, as well as the parents he taught before us. i am sad beyond words. I know he is reunited with his "Lovey" and is truly in heaven. he will be missed.
