Sara “Nancy” Umstead, 91, of Spring City
Sara Nancy (Andes) Umstead, lovingly known as Nancy, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Phoenixville Hospital. She was 91 years old and the devoted wife of the late Harry K. Umstead, Jr.
Born on February 14, 1934, in Norristown, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Sara (Miller) Andes. Nancy was the last surviving child of her family. She grew up in the Spring City area, attended Limerick Schools, and was a member of Spring City United Methodist Church.
Nancy was known for her joyful spirit, love of service, and devotion to her family and community. In addition to raising her four children, she worked for ICI America and Diamond Glass. In retirement, she remained active—volunteering at church and within her Bard House community, always ready to lend a hand where needed. She also found joy in traveling and treasured time spent with her family.
She is survived by her four children: Wendy Weikel (James), Kendra Edwards (John II), Darlene Umstead, and Tammy Walters (Kenneth); eight grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her two grandchildren, James Weikel, Jr. and Wayne Smith, as well as her three brothers: Richard (Dick), Gerald, and William Andes.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, September 6, at R. Strunk Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Phoenixville, with Rev. Dennis Keen officiating. Visitation will take place from 9:00 to 10:30 AM prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens.
