Obituary of David E. Kells, Sr.

Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

David E. Kells Sr., age 81, passed away at home on June 26, 2025, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 16, 1943, in Philadelphia, Dave was the beloved son of the late Edward M. and Pearl A. (Stitzel) Kells. He was raised in Spring City and was a lifelong member of Spring City United Methodist Church until its closure.

Dave was a proud graduate of Spring-Ford High School, Class of 1961, where he played basketball and met the love of his life, Betty “Sue” (Ott) Kells, a cheerleader. Their high school romance blossomed into a devoted marriage of 62 years, a milestone they celebrated this past June.

Dave earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Buffalo and later completed his associate degree at Pierce College. In 1972, he and Sue settled in Port Providence, where they raised their family before moving to Buckingham Township in 2007.

A proud member of the Phoenixville Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, Dave was deeply committed to his community and his values. He had a lifelong love of reading, enjoyed playing golf, and cherished time spent with his family. One of his favorite places in the world was the Outer Banks, where he and his family made countless memories over the 30 years they spent at their home in Corolla. Affectionately known as the “tan man with the cigar,” Dave could often be found on the beach, soaking in the sun and enjoying a good cigar.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Betty Susanne Kells (Ott), and their three children: Kimberly Boyd (Stephen), David E. Kells Jr. (Deirdre), and Gwyneth Carrigan (Christopher). He is also survived by his sister, Judith Hallman of Gilbertsville, and his brother-in-law, Donald Sheffy of Indiana.

“G Pop” will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Aimee Smith (Joel), John Boyd, Alec Kells, Victoria Kells, Kayla Kells, Bryn Carrigan, and Kinsey Carrigan, and his great- granddaughters, Charlotte and Lucy Smith.

Dave is predeceased by his sister, the late Joanne Sheffy, and his brother-in-law, the late Charles Hallman.

Dave’s legacy is one of quiet strength, unwavering love, and deep devotion to his family. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, donations to Fox Chase Cancer Center and Penn Medicine Hospice.

All are welcome to visit with the family July 15, 2025 at 11 AM at the Spring Mill Country Club, 80 Jacksonville Rd. Ivyland, PA 19874. A memorial service will begin at 12:00 PM (Noon) followed by a luncheon.
